FAQ: Should I put meta tags on every page, or just on my home page? Bob S., Janesville, WI

A: Meta tags should be on every page that you create and publish. If you want a good chance of your pages ranking high on the Search Engine Results Position (SERPs), you will want to put them on each page. They will help the search engines fins and index all of your pages.

FAQ: Are some HTML tags more important than others? Skip S., Cave Creek, AZ

A: Yes. To maximize your chance of achieving high ranking on the search engines you should use the following tags on every page:

  • DocType - Required by W3
  • HTML - so the spiders know HTML is being used
  • Title - Required by W3. It is the first line which appears on search engine queries, and is very important.
  • Description - especially important for MSN ranking
  • Keyword - a major tag to indicate the contents of the page

We consider these tags to be the minimum page requirements. We encourage the use of additional tags as appropriate or desirable.

FAQ: Should I use commas to separate the keywords on my Keywords meta tags? Dave V., Aurora, CO

A: There are differing views on how to separate keywords on this tag. And as search engine algorithm changes occur, the optimal method may change as well. The best advice is to rely on judgment as to what presents the best quality and flexibility of re-combining individual words.

For this reason our preference is to use only one space to separate individual words. By doing so, it allows the spiders to index not only the individual words, but also various combinations of the words. It is also, however, important to place the major keywords at the front of the tag. And also the words should ususlly be placed in the same order as the usual expected query.

For example: Suppose you have a page about search engine optimization. And you believe that the words which best describe this page are "search", "engine", "optimization", "organic", "dynamic", and "affordable". Assume that the types of visitors you want to attract to your site will query for "affordable organic search engine optimization".

You might best configure the tag as : "affordable organic search engine optimization dynamic". This would parallel your expected query of "affordable organic search engine optimization", and also "affordable organic optimization", "affordable search engine optimization" and many other variations. We suspect that commas might impair reconfigurations, so we generally only use spaces. The tag also utilizes "dynamic", not so much because of an anticipated query, but because you should optimally desribe the text in the tags for high relevance.

FAQ : What is a pixel? Wally B., Las Vegas, NV

A : A pixel is an individual unit of color. It is the most basic unit of measure for an image.

FAQ : What is a hyperlink ? Ed B., Grosse Pointe Park, MI

A: A hyperlink is text or an image in a document which transports you to another document or elsewhere on the same page when you click on it. It is the main form of internet navigation.

FAQ : I've heard that one of the types of black hat SEO is keyword stuffing. What is that and why is it considered to be an unethical type of optimization? Marc D., Tampa, FL

A : Keyword stuffing is designed to get a high search engine position for a particular keyword. It is when the page or parts of the page have much repetition of the same keyword or keyphrase in the content or the tags. It raises a red flag and is deemed to be an unethical form of SEO because it has low value, is done solely for search engines and not the human visitors, and is classified as a spamming technique.
